Oft people come to me and ask me for relationship tips. They then say that they have seen pictures of Barack and I – both of us laughing or looking into each other’s eyes and seeming content in our togetherness – and therefore believe that we enjoy each other’s company. They ask how we managed to be married for thirty years and not be bitter. I would then like to answer: Yes, sometimes it comes as a surprise to us too! And I mean that very seriously. We have our problems, of course, but I love this man and he loves me now, still and, it seems, forever.
He’s an owl, I’m a lark
Our love isn’t perfect, but it’s real, and we’re committed to it. This certainty stands with the presence of a massive grand piano at the heart of every room we enter. My husband and I are very different in many ways. He’s an owl who enjoys solitary pursuits, while I’m a lark who likes to be around people. I think he spends too much time golfing while he thinks I watch too much crap on TV.
