The type classes for car insurance in 2023 are known and there is bad news: it will be a little more expensive for over 8 million Germans. We show the big losers and winners of the new classification.
If you want to buy a new or used car, you should first carry out a free type class query. This allows you to quickly find out how much the liability insurance and partial or fully comprehensive insurance will cost – after all, these are not inconsiderable operating costs for every car.
But the type classes are also redefined every year, since they are statistical values. In the meantime, the values for 2023 have been announced.

New type classes for 2023: Who pays more and who saves
A total of
8.1 million Germans
will have to pay extra for car insurance from next year because their vehicle has slipped into a more expensive type class. The Nissan Leaf and the Mercedes Benz GLC 250 Coupe 4Matic attracted particular attention because they were upgraded by two classes.
On the other hand, the Skoda Kamiq 1.5 TSI and the Toyota C-HR Hybrid 2.0 made the biggest improvements and improved three type classes. Owners of these vehicles will therefore save in the future, just like 4.8 million drivers in total.
For the remaining 70 percent of policyholders, everything stays the same. That is around 29.3 million citizens.
Simple check: How do the type classes work?
You can check online yourself how your vehicle is currently classified. Simply call up the web app for type class queries (via our partner portal chip.de) and complete the form fields:

- Construction year
- fuel
- Performance
- displacement
- segment
So the car can be narrowed down quite well. A list of several vehicles then appears. Pay attention to details such as “sedan” or “estate” as well as the displayed service to find the right entry.
Use the arrow button to expand the line for more details. The scale, which shows you how your car performs in comparison, is practical. The scale goes from 10 to 34 and refers to the accident and damage balance of each car model.
