This year the Nobel Prize in Medicine will be awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun from the USA for the discovery of microRNA. This was announced by the Nobel Assembly of the Stockholm Karolinska Institute on Monday.
Since the first award in 1901, a total of 227 people have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine, including 13 women. Last year it went to the Hungarian-born biochemist Katalin Karikó and the US immunologist Drew Weissman. They received it for their fundamental work on mRNA technology, which enabled the incredibly rapid development of corona vaccines. From the perspective of the Nobel Prize Committee for Medicine, Karikó and Weissman's work has helped develop vaccines at an unprecedented pace, contain a devastating pandemic and save millions of lives.
