In the US, a former employee of the news service Twitter has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison for espionage. The 42-year-old man from California was found guilty in August of having passed on data from users of the online platform to the Saudi royal family. The sentence has now been announced.

According to the US Department of Justice on Thursday, the data was used to identify and locate people “of interest to the Saudi royal family”. The information would have helped Saudi Arabia “target political dissidents”.
