A few days after the recent setbacks of PayPal, which suffered a wave of unsubscriptions following a change in its terms of use, we learn that the platform has decided to stop offering its services to the League of Social Democrats ( LSD) from Hong Kong. PayPal simply mentioned “significant risks” without giving further details.
PayPal attacks a democratic party in China
PayPal HKthe Hong Kong branch of the American company PayPal, has closed the account of the League of Social Democrats (LSD) from Hong Kong.
The information was communicated directly by the pro-democracy political party on Facebook, which itself would have received a simple email from the rather vague platform:
โAfter reviewing your account, we determined that the risks involved were too great. […] this matter has been fully considered and our decision is final. ยป
In addition, no details of the “risks” mentioned here have been given by PayPal.
According Chow Ka-fatthe vice-president of LSD, the group is no longer able to receive donations via PayPal since the receipt of the email, but would still be able to withdraw the funds raised so far by this means.
He also insisted on highlight the bias of today’s businesses :
โIt seems that even when doing business, companies need to think ahead about who they are dealing with. This sort of entrepreneurial freedom of the past has apparently disappeared. ยป

A statement that is reminiscent of the recent setbacks encountered by PayPal, after the company changed its terms of use in order to be able to collect up to โฌ2,500 from its clients’ accounts if they made statements considered dangerous by society. However, she reversed her decision following a wave of massive unsubscriptions.
The pro-democracy group now encourages its supporters to provide financial assistance via other payment channels such as PayMe, the mobile solution developed by HSBC bank.
Classified in the social democratic parties, the LDS works for direct democracy and is directly opposed to the Chinese power in place. Its members are also often banned from demonstrating during appearances by Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China.
