Designing a kitchen — With River Oak Kitchen Designers
(Find out about designing a kitchen like a professional)
Due to the frequent changes in how we use our kitchens, kitchen design is essentially an ongoing learning process. Kitchens are now family areas used for cooking, obviously, but also entertaining, dining, working, and even relaxing. Previously, one member of the home was only allowed to cook.
It is essential to plan a kitchen thoroughly from the beginning, therefore we contacted leading kitchen designers to help us define the process. Below, we walk you through each phase of the design process so you can combine your innovative kitchen ideas with River Oak Kitchen Designers considerations to produce a harmonious space.
The cabinetry of your kitchen is something your family and guests will look at for years to come. Beautiful cabinetry design allows your kitchen to stand out as the centrepiece of your home. Not to mention, good design will add to the value of your home.
Cabinets come in varying types and quality of construction. Making the right choice now helps give you a kitchen you’ll love for years to come. This guide will educate you on cabinets so you can make the best decision possible.
Types of Cabinet
Base
A standard base cabinet is 24 inches deep and 34½ inches tall. The base cabinet will be placed above a toe kick of approximately 4 inches. Custom and semi-custom cabinets can be made to any depth required.
Wall: This upper-level cabinetry is typically 12 inches deep.
Tall: Tall cabinets typically serve as a pantry or broom storage. Tall cabinets’ height is determined by the height of the ceilings.
Specialty Units: specialty units are used to maximize square footage and organization. Corner cabinets, sink/cooktop fronts, bottle racks are all examples of specialty units.
Cabinet Quality
Ready to Assemble
Designed with price in mind, these cabinets are purchased like the name hints, unassembled. For those very skilled in DIY, this option will save money, although it has limited design options. Keep in mind you will need assembly materials. Cabinet installation is difficult so this option is only for skilled professionals.
Stock
Like the name implies, these cabinets are basic and economical. They are mass produced and only available in certain sizes. Be sure to do research when purchasing as oftentimes, you are sacrificing quality for affordability.
Semi-Custom: semi-custom gives the buyer options in style and material. Obviously, it comes with a price increase from stock and ready to assemble cabinets. These special order cabinets are standard in some areas but changeable in others.
Custom: custom cabinetry is the high-end option for kitchen cabinets. These cabinets are unique and specifically designed for your space. You can count on these cabinets being made by a skilled artisan. You’ll have flexible options for size, shape depth, or finish as well as accessories.
