Aldi Süd is currently testing a new offer in the USA. Customers can order groceries in the online shop, which are then delivered directly to their front door. The service is also conceivable for Germany.
As the “Handelsblatt” reports, Aldi Süd is testing an online shop for fresh groceries in the USA. According to information from the company, this test should also be a test run for a web shop in Germany. If all the conditions are right, Aldi Süd could start in Germany as early as 2023.
Aldi Süd obviously wants to develop a platform based on the software tested in the USA that will allow the company to use it in all international markets. The discounter has 2,200 stores in 38 states in the United States. Fresh groceries can easily be ordered there in the online shop. A start-up then delivers the order to the customer.
“We are now testing this with a small group of consumers and then want to gradually roll it out nationwide,” Scott Patton, purchasing manager at Aldi USA, told Handelsblatt.
Aldi Süd: Food deliveries are also being experimented with in other countries
Similar to the USA, Aldi Süd is also experimenting with online retail models in other countries. In Switzerland there is a similar model as in the USA. In Great Britain, Aldi Süd operates a service where customers put together and pay for the goods online, but then have to pick them up at the store. Since the test has apparently started successfully in the USA, industry experts believe it is only a matter of time before the service is also rolled out in Germany.
Around 50 positions for e-commerce specialists are advertised at the Mühlheim headquarters. You should define the technical basis there. What a possible online service in Germany could look like and how the delivery logistics can be organized has not yet been determined.
The market is considered difficult, whether a profit can be made is questionable. Even if fast delivery services like gorillas are currently weakening, a number of companies have already established themselves. Competitor Lidl has had a successful online shop for years, but does not offer any groceries there. Aldi Süd and Aldi Nord also offer non-food promotional items in their online shops.
