Spring is making itself felt and the sun has not only been shining more often lately, but it has finally gotten warmer again. Everywhere people are drawn outside and the outdoor gastronomy, including street cafés and beer gardens, is slowly opening. Right now, when it’s not yet warm enough for a T-shirt and shorts, sunny spots are in demand. There you can not only fill up with lots of vitamin D, but often also take off your warm jacket.
But how can you reliably find safe sunbathing spots? The free web app Shadowmap (via CHIP) makes this visible and visualizes sunlight and shadows at any time of the day. With a quick glance at the map, cool shady spots can be avoided.
This is how the shadow map works
A quick look at the shadow map helps to avoid the cool seats in the shade. There you simply enter the appropriate location in the search bar and you will then receive a 3D view of it. You can then use the slider at the top right to set the desired time.
For example, if you are planning to visit your favorite café in the afternoon, you can easily set the time to 2:00 p.m. You will then see a visualization of sunlight and shadows. For example, if the adjacent building casts a shadow in a certain area of the outdoor catering area, it will appear darker than the rest.
So you always know exactly which places you should avoid and when and which ones still promise sun rays in the late afternoon.
However, the shadow map is not quite perfect yet, because the online map does not yet know larger hedges or trees and is therefore particularly suitable for street cafés. In beer gardens & Co., it is therefore advisable in any case to take a quick look at the situation on site and to include this in the choice of seating.
