Takeover by United Internet: Sky Germany is expected to be sold in 2022
Sky Germany is to be sold. As has now become known, United Internet, the parent company of 1&1, could take over the pay TV service this year.
It has been known for a few months that Comcast would probably like to sell the German offshoot of Sky. As “DWDL” reports, the negotiations are already well advanced and the takeover could be completed this year.
Apparently United Internet, the parent company behind 1&1, is interested. Other possible buyers, such as ProSiebenSat.1 Media SE or Deutsche Telekom, have already announced that they do not want to buy Sky Deutschland.
The consequences of the takeover for Sky customers are still unclear
The reason for the sale is primarily the special position of Sky Germany in Comcast’s business models. In other countries, Sky is not only active as a TV provider, but also as an Internet provider. Due to the strong competition in TV and streaming, the profit margins at Sky Germany are likely to be relatively small.
On the other hand, following the takeover of Sky Germany, United Internet could appear as a full-service provider for Internet, telephone and TV with 1&1. It is not yet known what could change for Sky customers after the sale.
