After Pavel Durov's arrest, the Russian embassy demanded an explanation from France about the reasons for his detention, giving the Telegram affair a geopolitical turning point.
Diplomatic tensions rise between France and Russia after arrest of Pavel Durov
This weekend, the arrest of Pavel Durov, the founder and CEO of Telegram, has generated reactions from all sides, especially within the crypto ecosystem with some personalities calling this arrest censorship. As the action against Tornado Cash did 2 years ago, this case opens a philosophical debate between privacy, freedom of expression and the criminal abuses that such tools can generate.
In the wake of this arrest, Diplomatic tensions between France and Russia have increased. And for good reason, the person concerned shares several nationalities, including French and Russian. Thus, the Russian embassy accused “the french homeland” not to collaborate, notably via a message on account X:

In this message, the embassy indicates that it has requested explanations:
After the media published information about Pavel Durov's arrest, we immediately asked the French authorities for explanations about the reasons for his arrest and demanded protection of his rights and consular access. To this day, the French side still avoids cooperating on this issue. We remain in contact with Pavel V. Durov's lawyer.
While Telegram reported on Sunday evening that its CEO traveled frequently to Europe and that he had nothing to hide, it is now a matter of waiting for the announcement of the charges that will be brought against him. Beyond the legal question that weighs on the future of Pavel Durov, we see here that this affair is now taking a geopolitical turn.
