JPsychologists estimate that every person makes around 20,000 decisions every day. Most of it unconsciously because the brain automates to reduce complexity. So we don’t even notice how we put on our shoes in the morning, we don’t think about which baker we’re headed for. Even at work, many people always follow the same patterns: Despite the open-desk policy, they choose the same desk, switch on the PC or hang their jackets in the wardrobe. And all without thinking deeply about it. However, if a momentous decision has to be made, such as accepting or rejecting a job offer, then an intensive thought process begins.
According to a 2016 Statista survey, 15.5 percent of Germans are afraid of making the wrong decision. However, if you ponder something for too long and without any result, at some point you will no longer be able to make a decision and you will be stuck in a merry-go-round of thoughts. They keep rolling through seemingly insurmountable problems without letting go. The word of the hour: “Overthinking” – in German excessive thinking.
