Thanks to their simple design and decades of proven technology, gas ovens remain one of the most common and reliable household appliances for cooking. But sometimes, during cooking, the oven begins to behave inadequately – it spontaneously goes out or completely stops burning. But if the cause is not related to the gas supply elements, you can try to restore the operation of the oven by yourself.
Why does the oven go out in the gas stove?
Before looking for reasons why the gas stove oven does not turn on, it is necessary to make sure that the valve is open and that gas with normal pressure is supplied to the equipment. To do this, just light the burner on the hob. If the fire burns with the usual blue flame, the problem is in the oven. But not only the oven goes out due to equipment malfunction. Some situations arise due to ignorance of the peculiarities of the equipment and insufficient care:
- There is not enough oxygen in the oven to ignite the burner. Most manufacturers recommend lighting the oven with the door ajar;
- The user releases the oven knob too quickly on gas-operated models. The thermocouple does not have time to heat up and generate enough voltage to hold the valve in place. Usually, it can take up to 15 seconds to generate the necessary voltage;
- Food residue on the burner or soot deposits on the surface of the burner. In addition to increasing the cooking time, if the burner is contaminated near the flame sensor setting, the flame may go out during operation or may not be lit at all. The burner must be removed and cleaned to restore oven operation;
- The burner is deformed after service. In this case, little fire hits the gas control thermocouple, and the valve is not held in the open position. Check that the burner orientation is correct. Call a craftsman if it is impossible to align the position yourself.
Important: If the burner does not ignite, the second attempt can be made after at least one minute, letting the unburned gas evaporate. In the meantime, open a window and ventilate the room.
The main malfunctions of the gas oven
If your oven is broken – it goes out, and the above methods have not helped, you need to call a master. Since it is not safe to repair gas appliances yourself. When the oven in the stove does not work, the most common cause is:
- Breakage of the gas control elements (the flame sensor (thermocouple) or the oven solenoid valve is out of order). The faulty part must be replaced;
- The thermocouple location is disturbed. Adjustment is required;
- Malfunction of the thermostat. If necessary, calibrate or replace the thermostat;
- Burner nozzle clogging. Requires cleaning or installation of a new nozzle;
- Broken plastic handle. Usually, the faucet remains in good condition, and replacement of the plastic handle is sufficient;
- The gas valve inside the gas knob is stuck. The master disassembles and cleans the parts of the faucet. If necessary, replace it with a similar one.
How the oven gas control works
After pressing the gas knob, the solenoid valve actuator is opened. The fire on the burner is ignited with an auto-ignition or matches. The thermocouple installed near the burner starts to heat up and generates enough voltage to hold the valve open. The knob can then be released. If the fire goes out for any reason, the thermocouple will cool down, and the coil of the solenoid valve will no longer be energized. The valve actuator will be closed by the spring. The gas will stop flowing to the burner, preventing a leak. To reignite the burner, repeat the same steps as for the initial ignition.
