After the attack on the Jewish student Lahav Shapira in Berlin, a 24 -year -old man has been sentenced to three years in prison. The Tiergarten district court guilty of the then fellow students of the victim of the dangerous bodily harm and assumed an anti -Semitic motive.
The court thus went beyond the public prosecutor's request. Prosecutor Tim Kaufmann had asked for a prison sentence of two years and four months. The act was an “anti -Semitic excess”, as prosecutor Tim Kaufmann said in his plea. “Lahav Shapira was attacked because he is a Jew and campaigned against anti -Semitism,” said the prosecutor.

The accused had stood in court and asked for forgiveness. However, he rejected the allegation of anti -Semitism. “I was not concerned with politics, but the cooperation among fellow students,” said the former FU teacher student, born in Berlin, whose parents come from Lebanon.
Personal apology
In his closing word shortly before the judgment, he personally apologizes to Shapira. “I'm sorry to have inflicted pain.” His defense lawyer advocated a probation penalty of one year and nine months as well as a money requirement.
The accused and the victim met on February 2, 2024 by chance in a bar in Berlin-Mitte. When the Jewish student left the restaurant, the perpetrator followed him. He had accused Shapira in a WhatsApp group of FU students and that he had torn off posters at the FU, it was said in his confession. Then there was a dispute and he struck. He underestimated his martial arts experience, according to the 24-year-old.
According to the judgment, the Jewish student was put down by his former fellow student with his fist. When he was bleeding on the ground, a kick in the face followed with full force. The 32-year-old suffered a complex medium-sized fracture and brain hemorrhage. He had to be operated on several times.
