Dhe House committee investigating the deadly Jan. 6, 2021 riots subpoenaed former President Donald Trump on Friday for testimony and documents related to his actions related to the bloodshed. He is accused of instigating the riots in the Capitol. The date for the summons is set for November 14 – after the midterm elections.
“As demonstrated in our hearings, we have assembled overwhelming evidence, including from dozens of your former appointees and associates, that you personally orchestrated and oversaw a multi-pronged effort to overthrow the 2020 presidential election and impede the peaceful transfer of power,” the committee said Trump in a letter sent with the subpoena.
Most recently, Trump responded to a summons from the parliamentary committee of inquiry in a 14-page letter of anger. In the letter to committee chair Bennie Thompson, published on Truth Social, Trump berated panel members, called the investigation a “witch hunt” and a “show trial,” and reiterated his widely debunked allegations of massive fraud in the 2020 presidential election.
“Despite very poor television ratings,” the House investigative committee held a “show trial the likes of which the country has never seen,” Trump wrote to Thompson, emphasizing his “anger” and “disappointment.” The body disregards rule of law standards, has no “real” Republicans as members and has “no legitimacy” because it does not deal with the “massive voter fraud”. “It’s a witch hunt at the highest level, a continuation of what has been going on for years,” said Trump, who is flirting with another presidential nomination in 2024.
