PayPal's two-factor authentication is being improved and the login options for users are being standardized. Who will soon have more options and who already has them.
PayPal has announced optimizations to its two-factor authentication (2FA) to improve the login experience for its users. These changes are intended to primarily affect users who implemented security measures on their own before the mandatory introduction of 2FA in accordance with the EU Payment Services Directive PSD2. Here are the most important details about the adjustment.
PayPal customers are currently receiving an email notification from the bank informing them of upcoming improvements to logging in. These are not spam or phishing emails, as PayPal recently clarified. The payment service is offering an optimized application to users who activated 2FA before the mandatory introduction of two-factor authentication in accordance with the EU Payment Directive PSD2 on January 1, 2021. These customers should now receive the same options as those for whom 2FA was automatically activated.
What do PayPal customers have to do because of the changes? Nothing!
The adjustments are set to come into effect in August and include additional security measures in the settings. In addition to the authenticator and the passkey, the PayPal app or WhatsApp will also be provided as a medium for the second factor in the future. In addition, it should be possible to save devices or web browsers, which was not the case until now. This should minimize the effort of entering numbers from the authenticator for every transaction or login.
Users don't need to do anything else, the new options will be available from the following month. For customers who were automatically switched over in 2021, these settings are already available. PayPal describes this change as a standardization.
