The day of a nurse is never the same twice. Every shift has the chance to be historic, thrilling, draining, energizing, or any combination of the above. Nurses see patients either at their fittest and most tenacious or at their weakest and most susceptible. Here is one example from Jessica, who works at The Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC.

MORNING ROUTINE
The alarm clock wakes me at 5:30. A quick shower relaxes me and prepares me for my busy day. Not all superheros wear capes; some wear scrubs. This thought inspires me every morning and makes me smile. My daily breakfast preparation is therapeutic. I’ve set up my table near a window so I can see New York City’s crowded streets to remind myself I’m not the only one who’s busy. After that, I head to the hospital, park my car, and walk towards it.
ARRIVING ON THE SCENE
Then I carry my report with me as I stroll around the ward ensuring sure no patients require any sort of medical attention. Even though I might be sore from all the heavy workload from yesterday, I keep a smile on my face after saying hello to nearly every nurse and doctor I come across around the corridors.
MAKING THE ROUNDS AND CHANCE TO HAVE A 14K GOLD STETHOSCOPE NECKLACE
After giving all my patients medications, it’s upsetting to see them in pain. They’re not alone; their families also struggle. Our unit has a seriously injured patient. I always stop by to chat with Alex when I have time between patients. As a hospital patient, he was the sweetest kid I’ve ever met. I hesitated and told him I couldn’t take the box he handed me, but I was compelled to accept it after spotting the gleam in his eyes. I didn’t open it and carried on with my round. I seldom have a chance to unwind because I can get a call at any moment of the day.
I am accountable for the lives of other people, thus I must be vigilant and active. I am aware of my obligations because even a small amount of negligence on my part could permanently harm a patient’s health. Today in the hospital it was really serene, and I had a chance to enjoy a cup of creamy coffee during the break. I noticed something in my pocket and I remembered it was the box Alex gave me. I opened the box and to my surprise it was a 14k gold stethoscope necklace. I experienced both astonishment and joy at the same time. A 14k gold stethoscope necklace always appealed to me since it was so glamorous. A card that read “Thank you for taking care of me” was also in the box. I shall always remember you, ma’am. Please accept this gift from me as a sign of appreciation. I’m so touched but there is not much time for me to feel joy.
The day turned out to be one of those days when the ER was crammed because a bus was involved in an accident and there was no chance of going home. I spent the night in the hospital, too much workload reminded me of when I decided to leave nursing during Covid-19. Healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, are at the forefront of patient care during a pandemic. These factors caused me to believe that high-risk and emergency situations would never end; these feelings had a negative impact on my emotions, causing emotional exhaustion, frustration, and distress, which led to feelings of helplessness and hopelessness and reduced my productivity. I recall keeping my resignation letter on my bedside every day. Desperate and tired, I came across a post of a nurse wearing scrubs and something caught my eye. It was a necklace she was wearing around her neck, the same as my nurse graduation necklace bought by my parents. It reminds me of how ambitious I was when I graduated from my college. I want to be an excellent nurse, providing comfort, compassion and care for those people who are suffering.
The girls captioned, “Hope is a thing with butterfly wings that perches in the soul, no matter how hard it gets never give up”. I felt the same when I read her caption. That was a sign for me to keep going and this gift was a sign that what nurses do matter a lot. Whenever I even think about quitting my nursing job, this necklace gave me hope and pride to stick with my job even in a much better way.
