DThe US administration appears to be changing course on whether Ukraine should get Western fighter jets. President Joe Biden briefed the leaders of the leading Western industrialized nations at the G-7 summit in Hiroshima that American pilots will be involved in training Ukrainians on F-16 fighter jets. This was announced by an American government representative on the sidelines of the summit meeting in Japan.
Accordingly, the training of Ukrainian fighter pilots should begin in a few weeks, probably in Europe. That will take a few months. The government representative was also quoted on CNN as saying: “While the training takes place in the coming months, our coalition of participating states will decide when we will actually deliver aircraft, how many we will deliver and who will deliver them”. Accordingly, the delivery has now been decided in principle.
European countries, including the Netherlands and Great Britain, had recently been pushing louder and louder to fulfill Kiev’s wish and deliver Western fighter jets. Several European countries have F-16 aircraft. However, they would be dependent on an American license for export, since the aircraft are produced by the US manufacturer Lockheed.
