EA criminal case has reignited the debate about political violence in the USA. A losing candidate in the New Mexico state legislature race has been arrested for inciting attacks on political opponents. The arrest warrant for Republican Solomon Peña, released by CNN on Wednesday, alleges that Peña instigated four men to assassinate four Democratic politicians. Nobody was injured in the attacks.
The mayor of Albuquerque, Democrat Tim Keller, said he assumed the crime was politically motivated based on the results of the investigation. It is an attack on democracy. “This kind of radicalism is a threat to our nation,” Keller said Monday.
Peña expressed sympathy for Donald Trump
In November’s election for the New Mexico House of Representatives, Peña clearly lost to his Democratic opponent. Peña tweeted that he did not accept the election result and expressed sympathy for former US President Donald Trump.
Trump also does not acknowledge his defeat in the 2020 presidential election to this day and continues to spread his allegations of voter fraud. A House of Representatives committee of inquiry had blamed Trump for the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Critics accuse Trump of inciting others to political violence through his stance.
