Dhe Turkish opposition politician Hüseyn Ors has been hospitalized and taken to intensive care after a physical altercation during a heated budget debate in parliament. Footage released by the DHA news agency showed Zafer Isik, an MP from President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s ruling AKP, beating the MP from the nationalist Iyi party. Several other MPs fell to the ground during the brawl.
The 58-year-old is “still being treated in intensive care,” DHA quoted a party friend of Ors as saying. His general condition was “not good after the blow to the head” and she was “very sad,” said Aylin Cesur. The trained doctor had given her colleague first aid after the incident and described his condition as “critical”.
The Turkish parliament is sometimes quite lively. In the past, particularly sensitive debates have repeatedly resulted in fisticuffs, for example in 2020, when tense discussions about Turkey’s military engagement in Syria culminated in a fight.
In this year’s budget debates, which take place six months before the next parliamentary and presidential elections, MPs from all parties are increasingly trying to assert their interests. Iyi Party spokesman Kursat Zorlu described the incident as “a sad day for the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and a shameful day for those who carried out this attack”. Erdogan’s AKP initially did not comment on this.
