A large envelope to help free developers from Tornado Cash. Vitalik Buterin, the co-creator of Ethereum (ETH), has just made a significant donation in their favor.
Vitalik Buterin gives in defense of Tornado Cash developers
Developers Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev were both prosecuted for the role they had in the creation of Tornado Cash. The developers are accused of facilitating money laundering through their platform.
But their arrest has created outrage in the crypto community, which argues that proposing an exchange protocol does not make it responsible for the use made of it by malicious people.
Vitalik Buterin has been a historic supporter of Tornado Cash and he reiterated his desire to help the cause of its developers. In the last days of the year 2024, he actually donated 50 ETH – or around $167,000 at the current price.

The legal saga of Tornado Cash
Two Tornado Cash developers have so far been arrested : Alexey Pertsev received 5 years in prison and appealed. Roman Storm's trial will take place on April 14. A third developer, Roman Semenov is on the run and has been placed on an FBI list.
This is not the first time that Vitalik Buterin has donated money to this cause. He paid around $240,000 in ETH last October. The United States Treasury, which launched this legal action, is also the subject of complaints from two groups believing that it has exceeded its rights.

Last November, Tornado Cash won. A group of users of the protocol had in fact managed to get recognition that there was no reason to sanction the addresses of Tornado Cash smart contractswhich made them de facto illegal. But despite this victory, the battle is not yet won for Roman Storm and Alexey Pertsev.
