The house bar is less a place than an opportunity to enjoy a good drink in private. A bit of hardware is definitely necessary for domestic drinking culture.
She is the elegant sister of the party room. Not so impetuous, loud and sweaty, but relaxed and dignified. It’s not for wild nights with music, dancing and uncontrollable guests. Nothing for a quick, euphoric high. No, the house bar is the civilized place in the house, a haven of stylish distraction, the boardroom of good taste. You don’t get drunk at the house bar, you enjoy the evening at the house bar.
But do they still exist? The local gem that we know mainly from old American films, in which the host makes his guests a couple of good drinks with sleepwalking certainty and then you indulge in a cheerful chat together? Are there still people who have a bar globe in the corner of their living room? One of those colonial-style globes with room for a couple of fine bottles and a couple of cigars? Are there still these practical cupboards, behind the doors of which there is plenty of space for glasses, bottles and all kinds of accessories?
