The Avalanche network was shut down this morning, with block production shut down for over two hours. It seems that an update caused this problem. We look at the reasons for this forced break.
The Avalanche network shut down for two hours
Several users noted the obvious network shutdown early this morning. Avalanche’s C-Chain could not produce blocks for more than two hoursraising questions from the community:
Reporting live from https://t.co/YThVs0ApB0, it appears that block production on the Avalanche C-Chain has been at a halt for over 2 hours.
Authorities are still trying to determine the cause and emergency services are just arriving at the scene.

Avalanche co-founder Kevin Sekniqi said the network hadn’t been stable for “over an hour,” and that update to new version was in question:
“It was a bug with version 1.9.12. The fix has just been launched, and the network is starting to stabilize again.»
The bug in question caused some network nodes to fail when the latter checked the transactions. Especially during the “bootstrapping” process, which allows the blockchain to be recreated in its final stage. Once the solution was published, the validators were able to update their nodes, and thus resume block production.

Fortunately few consequences for Avalanche
The bug had no major consequences for the Avalanche network. However, some exchanges have temporarily stopped AVAX deposits and withdrawals as a precaution. This is particularly the case for Upbit and Bithum, as well as ThorSwap. They were then quickly unblocked.
The news has caused temporary wariness among some users, as Platypus, an Avalanche-based decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol, recently suffered a hefty $8.5 million hack. But it was indeed a simple bug here, which was quickly corrected.
