The traditional New Year’s Concert from Vienna is a worldwide TV event: more than 50 million music enthusiasts in more than 90 countries are ringing in the new year with the lively sounds from Vienna. The Vienna Philharmonic are famous – it’s not for nothing that their album is ranked fourth among the best-selling classical music albums. So that music enthusiasts can listen to the sounds of the Vienna Philharmonic again this year, ZDF will broadcast the entire concert on home screens on January 1 at 11:15 a.m.
Polkas, horses and ballet – there is something for all classical tastes at the New Year’s concert
Once again, the program mainly includes works by the Viennese Strauss dynasty. Two classics by Johann Strauss should not be missing: the overture to his operetta “Die Fledermaus” and the waltz “On the beautiful blue Danube”. Other waltzes, polkas and marches round off the cheerful and at the same time contemplative classical highlight of the year, including works that will be heard for the first time at the New Year’s Concert.
Clips show the Vienna State Ballet dancing to Strauss melodies in the palace and park grounds of Schönbrunn. The ballet’s choreography was created by the director of the Vienna State Ballet, Martin Schläpfer, and the Austrian Arthur Arbesser provided the costume ideas. Also on display are probably the most famous white horses in the world: the Lipizzaners of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna, who perform to the “Nymph Polka” by Josef Strauss. Other pre-recorded recordings take viewers on a stroll through the city center of Vienna and to other world heritage sites in Austria.
