After 25 years at Google, Susan Wojcicki has announced that she is leaving the ship. The iconic YouTube CEO will be replaced by Neal Mohan, who was quick to outline his ambitions for the platform. It could be that non-fungible tokens (NFT) have a special place there.
A new pro-Web3 CEO?
After a wave of 12,000 layoffs in recent weeks, Google is now renewing the executives of its senior hierarchy. Susan Wojcicki, the iconic CEO of YouTube, announced her resignation on February 16.after 25 years with the group.
Although this does not directly concern our industry, it is important to emphasize the leading role that Susan Wojcicki had in the construction and development of Google. For the record, she even lent her garage to founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, which became the company’s first headquarters.
An important page that turns for Google and YouTube, which sees Wojcicki being replaced by Neal Mohan. This product manager, who joined Google in 2008, notably led major projects such as YouTube Premium, YouTube TV and YouTube Shorts.
What may look promising for YouTube and our ecosystem, is that Neal Mohan is a Web3 advocate. In February 2022, he published a blog post in which he expressed his desire to“Helping creators take advantage of emerging technologies” and that could go through “things like NFTs” :
“Giving a verifiable way for fans to own videos, photos, artwork, and even unique experiences from their favorite creators could be an attractive prospect for creators and their audiences.” There’s a lot to consider to make sure we approach these new technologies responsibly, but we think there’s also incredible potential. »

NFTs, a real bonus for YouTube?
For a while, YouTube’s ambition is to diversify sources of revenue for creators, as well as the formats of the content created. The arrival of Shorts – short videos of less than a minute – brings a breath of fresh air to the platform.
However, it faces the emergence of tough competition: TikTok, Instagram, Twitch. The video content consumption platforms are more and more numerous and renew themselves enormously. The implementation of these new means of monetization of content by Web3 could allow YouTube to recover its letters of nobility.
Moreover, the YouTube ecosystem lends itself particularly well to this type of evolution. Non-fungible tokens could very well complement YouTube’s offerwhether in the form of paid subscriptions, loyalty programs, exclusive rewards or access to unique content.
Neal Mohan also touched on the metaverse, stating that YouTube thinks big to make the viewing experience more immersive. Incidentally, Google CEO Sundar Pichai also said at the same time that he “was definitely interested in blockchain and looking at how to contribute to the ecosystem and add value.”
