On 18 November 2022, he voluntarily took retirement as Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries. He was replaced by Kamran Rizvi. His retirement was supposed to be held on 31 December 2022. On 19 November 2022, the President of India Droupadi Murmu appointed him as the Election Commissioner of India. As per the statement of the Union Law and Justice Ministry,
The President is pleased to appoint Shri Arun Goel, IAS (Retd.) (PB: 1985) as the Election Commissioner in the Election Commission with effect from the date he assumes the office.”
