Bumpy roads: It’s that easy to report dangerous potholes to the authorities
Many roads in Germany resemble a lunar landscape. But even isolated potholes can be expensive and dangerous: damage to the vehicle or accidents can result. But you can put pressure on the authorities in just a few steps.
Cities and municipalities have a traffic safety obligation. This means that it is their responsibility to keep the roads maintained. Often, however, a sign is simply put up that warns of road damage – this eliminates possible liability claims.
If no repairs are made for a long time, the road will eventually look like the cratered landscape on the moon. We will show you where and how you can best report such road damage – for example with the ADAC app Läuft’s:
Report damage directly in the browser
In principle, every citizen has the opportunity to report road damage. This is particularly advisable when potholes create a hazardous situation – for example, because drivers jerkily avoid the hole or the car could be damaged due to its size.
Just search the internet for “report pothole” followed by the name of your city or community. This is how you check whether there is an uncomplicated offer for reporting damage. Examples:
Incidentally, this often also works for cycle paths and sidewalks. Depending on the type of damage, these are prioritized and hopefully repaired promptly. It is quickest when there is a risk of an accident.
Alternatively report via app
It’s also easier to use the ADAC’s “Läuft’s” app. Here you can create your own reports in your region in just a few steps, for example on topics such as:
- potholes
- defective street lighting
- construction sites
- Accessibility
- traffic lights
Another practical feature is that you can easily attach photos, descriptions and an exact location on the map to the reports. The authorities and municipalities know exactly what is at stake – you can then keep an eye on the processing status of your request via the app.
But there is a small drop of bitterness: the defect reporter is not available in all regions of Germany. For example, Baden-Württemberg, parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland and Saxony are left empty-handed. The areas are divided according to the regional clubs of the ADAC.
