Income tax due: That’s how little you really have left over from the 300 euros energy flat rate
Many Germans are already eagerly awaiting the relief provided by the energy flat rate. However, no extra 300 euros land in your account, because the sum is still taxed. This is how you calculate what you really have left.
Payment of the flat-rate energy price (EPP) will start in September. There are 300 euros for all those entitled to claim and since most people do not have to actively do anything for this, this is a welcome measure.
But the full 300 euros usually do not arrive in the account. Unfortunately, the catch is that the EPP is subject to income tax. So much – or little – of it is left with you.
Income tax deduction for energy flat-rate
300 euros more gross salary in September, that’s how you can summarize the EPP for many people. However, as the legislator has stipulated, the EPP paid out by the employer is subject to income tax deduction as a so-called “other payment”. So the state collects a part of its lump sum right away.
As the Federal Ministry of Finance reports, only 300 euros remain on average
193 euros net
left over. This is then the average amount that ends up in the accounts.
However, since wage tax varies according to earnings and tax class, the individual deduction is between 0 and 142.42 euros. So there are people who get the full 300 euros, the other end of the spectrum is only 158 euros, which is left over from the 300 euros flat rate.
Calculate how much remains
But how do you now calculate what is left of the EPP? Unfortunately, the subject of income tax is complex. The easiest way is to enter the framework conditions that apply to you into a salary calculator and see what remains of your gross amount as a net amount at the end. The difference to your normal net salary then corresponds to your EPP.
Anyone who has a high tax rate will ultimately get less out of the energy flat rate – those who remain below the basic tax-free allowance benefit from the full sum of the energy flat rate.
The Ministry of Finance provides a simplified calculator with tax class 1, which you can use to calculate your wage tax relief for 2022. The net amount of the EPP is also displayed there.
