The crowning glory of the long Pentecost weekend: Tonight Apple is showing a lot of innovations at the start of the WWDC developer conference. COMPUTER BILD summarizes the show.
iOS 16: Huge update coming
The iPhone operating system iOS 16 gets a fresh cell cure. Hardly anything changes in the look, but a lot is happening under the hood. Among other things, the lock screen can now be designed individually, for example with live weather or different fonts and widgets. Apple also lends a hand to the integrated messenger. Among other things, messages can still be changed after they have already been sent. There are also improvements for Siri. Thus, the dictation function is able to insert punctuation into a written text. Apple also lends a hand to the wallet: depending on the occasion, the data safe only displays certain data, such as the date of birth. And in Apple Pay comes payment in installments and delivery tracking. Apple Maps is getting a major update with an improved 3D view and the ability to include multiple stops when planning a route. All this and more is expected to come in September, along with the new iPhone.
watchOS 9: The Apple Watch just got healthier
Cupertino also lends a hand to the smart Apple Watch. watchOS 9, the operating system for the smartwatch, comes with many new functions. This includes, for example, the option of haptically recommending rest phases during training. In addition, the Apple Watch is now able to automatically recognize the sports during a triathlon and switch back and forth between them. A lot of new things are also coming in terms of health, including improved sleep control and optimized heart rhythm control. There are also other innovations, such as a detailed medication plan – and the option of scanning drug packaging to display a digital package insert.
Apple Silicon M2: Is this the new super processor?
Apple already caused a stir with the M1 chip. On the one hand, the new CPU marked the departure from Intel as a supplier, on the other hand, the processor was also convincing in tests. Now comes the M2 processor. Among other things, it offers up to 25 percent more graphics power compared to the M1, according to Apple. According to Cupertino, the M2 works much more energy-efficiently, which benefits the battery life in notebooks, among other things.
MacBook Air 2022: Angular hip flask with M2 CPU
The iPad Air already announced the angular design. Now it is also coming to the MacBook Air 2022. The bestseller comes with a 13.6-inch retina display, full HD webcam, improved speakers with Dolby Atmos support and a headphone input. Plus, the MagSafe Magnetic Power Adapter is making a return! In addition, there is the new M2 processor, which, according to Apple, provides a real boost in performance. Available in four colors and prices starting at $1,199.
MacBook Pro 2022: Now with M2 power
The MacBook Pro is also undergoing an update: the Pro Book is now also available with the aforementioned M2 processor. Otherwise it stays with the known equipment. Prices start at $1,299.
macOS Ventura: Work comfortably and securely on the Mac
Visually, there is not much new in the next macOS with the nickname Ventura. Apple is working on many details for this. Among other things, there is an improved multitasking called Stage Manger: It pushes all unused but open programs to the edge of the screen, where they wait to be used. Ventura even remembers the arrangement of the windows. Spotlight, the integrated search, has also been optimized. The shows a preview of the find under Ventura. In future, emails that have already been sent can be retrieved or mailings can be sent on a specific date. And in the Safari browser, a function for tab collaboration with other users is being introduced. But the issue of security is particularly important: Passkey is a new feature introduced in Safari. Passkey generates a security key via Touch or Face ID, which is only used to unlock a website and which, according to Apple, is unbreakable. With Metal 3, a new gaming graphics engine finds its way into Ventura. And with improved continuity, for example, the iPhone camera can be used as a webcam on the Mac.
iPadOS 16: Damn close to the notebook
Apple will soon make iPadOS 16 available for all compatible iPads. As part of the WWDC keynote, the manufacturer presented its tablet primarily as an office device that is used for collaborative work. For example, iPadOS 16 provides “Free Form”: This function invites colleagues to work together on a blank sheet of paper. Anyone can add notes, insert graphics or links, or contribute small drawings. In this way, ideas should also be developed over distances; So even after Corona, Apple is relying more on working from the home office. Also part of iPadOS 16: the Stage Manager, which should also ensure order on the desk under macOS Ventura. iPadOS 16 is available now as a developer beta, and will be available to all users in the fall.
