Drug war kills thousands
The economically strong and prosperous state of Guanajuato has recently become one of the most violent regions in Mexico. The drug cartels Santa Rosa de Lima and Jalisco Nueva Generación face each other there as rivals. In addition to drugs, this also involves the smuggling of stolen fuel. Authorities recorded more than 2,100 murders from January to August.
More than 340,000 murders have been reported across Mexico since December 2006, when the Mexican government launched a controversial war on drug gangs. Just eleven days ago, 20 people were killed in an armed attack in San Miguel Totolapan in the southern state of Guerrero.
