Super Mario Day originated in the United States. Like Star Wars Day on May 4th (aka May, the fourth), the name comes from the American way of writing the date: March 10th – or “Mar 10” for short. Because the numbers resemble the letters I and O, they eventually became Mario Day, or Mar10 Day. According to various sources, the initiator is a certain Mario Fascitelli from Albuquerque, New Mexico. In which year the unofficial holiday in honor of the game character was created is not known.
