Telekom, o2, Vodafone: How to prohibit cell phone providers from selling your data
Cell phone providers collect a lot of data from their users. Some of these are used for analytics and tracking. There are two simple ways to stop data collection, but there’s a catch with one particular provider.
The one with one
commission – at no extra cost to you! More info
Cellular service providers store some data about you, including movement data, zip code, age and gender. These are evaluated and sometimes passed on to third parties. But not everyone wants that.
If you are one of them, you can unsubscribe from tracking in just a few steps. However, there is a catch, because of the three major providers Telekom, o2 and Vodafone offers one no way in addition.
Prevent the sale of transaction data
In most cases, the data is completely anonymized and is also coarse enough that no individuals can be identified with it. At Telekom, for example, only the gender, the age group in 10-year increments and the first four digits of the postal code are used from the contract.
If you want to unsubscribe from the use of data at Telekom, simply visit the opt-out service via CHIP. All you have to do is enter the area code and your cell phone number at the bottom. You will receive a code via SMS, which you enter in the field provided. This also works with other providers such as Congstar or Klarmobil, which belong to Telekom.
It’s just as easy with o2 Telefónica and the service called “Decide for yourself”. Here you simply send an SMS with the text De-register to the short code 66866. Shortly thereafter you will receive a confirmation from o2. Roaming customers abroad, on the other hand, need the text Unsubscribe to the number +491771789498.
Users of Aldi Talk can also follow the same instructions, as this provider also belongs to the Telefónica Group. This also applies to simplytel, but the data is not used here, so an objection is not possible.
Vodafone offers no possibility of objection
The downside: At Vodafone, there is currently no way to submit such an objection to the movement data. Loud
Here you can only check the settings in the “MeinVodafone” app and see whether usage data is being transmitted to the mobile phone provider.
Most users should not be bothered by the anonymous tracking, since the data is processed in accordance with the GDPR and is coarse enough that no conclusions can be drawn about individual persons. If you still want to be on the safe side, at least two of the three major providers can do this in less than a minute.
