The famous Center Pompidou is embarking on the world of blockchain, through the acquisition of 18 NFTs. In this collection, we will find in particular a CryptoPunk.
The Center Pompidou museum gets into NFT
The Center Pompidou, which houses the National Museum of Modern Art, acquired a total of 18 digital works in the form of non-fungible tokens (NFT). It thus becomes the first French institution to carry out an operation of this scale.
These NFTs were created by 13 different artists around the world, and the most notable example in this collection is CryptoPunk number 110. We will also find other works there, such as an NFT from the Bitchcoin collection of Sarah Meyohas for example, whose initial project is considered the first tokenization of art on the blockchain, five months before the launch of Ethereum (ETH) .
Through these acquisitions, the Center Pompidou intends explore the influence of NFT and cryptocurrency technology on art. Moreover, if the concept of “digital art” seems relatively new, Philippe Bettinelli, curator of heritage in the service of new media, specifies that this is not the case and that non-fungible tokens are only a form of expression:
“In recent times, the media phenomenon that has accompanied the craze for NFTs may have given the impression that digital art had just appeared, whereas it has existed since the 1960s, in then very experimental and much less widely distributed. »

An upcoming exhibition
If for the moment no date has been advanced for the exhibition of these works in the rooms of the museum, this presentation to the public is indeed planned for this year. On this point, the Center Pompidou is holding a round table dedicated to NFTs on April 8during which the floor will be given to artists so that they can express their feelings about the influence of the blockchain on their work.
Philippe Bettinelli also indicates that the upcoming exhibition will be part of a global context on the dematerialization of art:
“For the exhibition, we are going to put them back into context, in particular by presenting a few objects that bear witness to this history of the dematerialization of the work, such as certificates, protocols, or documents that may have accompanied intangible approaches in the modern and contemporary art since the second half of the 20th century. »
While a little over two months ago, Ledger acted as a precursor with the announcement of a collection of NFT works, this news from the Center Pompidou comes to reaffirm the current paradigm shiftaccelerated by this technology.
