The heads of state and government of the seven leading democratic economic powers (G7) have condemned in the strongest possible terms the mock referendums in the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine. They also expressed their regret at the partial mobilization of the armed forces in Russia. The mock referendums are being used as a “false pretext” to change the status of sovereign Ukrainian territory that has fallen victim to Russian aggression, they said on Friday. “These actions are in clear violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law,” it said.
The sham referenda started by Russia and its deputies on Friday have no legitimacy whatsoever. The Russian actions disregarded “democratic norms” with its “open intimidation of the local population”. The votes did not reflect the will of the Ukrainian people, who have consistently resisted Russian attempts to change borders by force. “We will never recognize these referendums,” assured the heads of state and government. Nor would they ever accept an expected annexation of the areas.
The G7 countries also regretted the further escalation of the conflict, including the partial mobilization of Russian forces and the “irresponsible nuclear rhetoric” of Russia. The G7 called on all countries to reject the sham referendums. We are ready to impose further economic sanctions on individuals and groups who support Russia’s illegal activities.
The G7 partners stand by their promise to Ukraine to provide any military, financial and humanitarian assistance they may need to defend their sovereignty and territorial unity, it said. This also includes help with the reconstruction of the country, which will be the subject of an international expert conference in Berlin on October 25th. “We will stand by Ukraine as long as it is necessary.”
