PoE switch refers to a device that can transmit data for some IP terminal-based devices (such as wireless APs, network cameras, etc.) without changing any existing Ethernet cabling infrastructure, which can also achieve power supply. It can be considered as a switch that supports Power over Ethernet. The PoE switch adopts the PoE power supply technology. In addition to the data transmission function of the traditional switch, it also has the PoE power supply function, which can supply power to network equipment such as monitoring, wireless coverage, wireless transmission, network cameras, and wireless APs. The function of the PoE switch is more powerful than that of the traditional switch. Therefore, PoE switch has a wider range of applications than the traditional switch.
Part I. Performance Advantages of PoE Switch
-
Easy to install
PoE switches only need to install and support one cable, which is simple and space-saving, and the device can be moved at will.
-
Cost saving
Many live devices such as video surveillance cameras, etc. need to be installed in places where it is difficult to deploy AC power. PoE saves money and time by eliminating the need for expensive power supplies and the time it takes to install them.
-
security
The PoE power supply end device will only supply power to the device that needs power supply, and the Ethernet cable will have voltage only when the device that needs power supply is connected, thus eliminating the risk of leakage on the line.
-
Simple to use
Like data transfer, PoE can supervise and control the device by using Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP). Users can automatically and safely mix legacy and PoE devices on the network that can coexist with existing Ethernet cables. In a wireless local area network, PoE simplifies RF test tasks, and access points can be easily moved and connected.
-
Collect electricity
A single UPS can provide power to all related equipment in the event of a power outage.
-
Make network equipment easy to manage
Because when the remote device is connected to the network, it can be remotely controlled, reconfigured or reset.
Part II. V-SOL PoE Switch
V-SOL has developed a series of PoE switches. It can be divided into two categories including Gigabit Ethernet Switch V11XX Series and Fast Ethernet Switch V10XX Series. All series are Layer 2 PoE switches.
Features of V-SOL Layer 2 unmanaged PoE switch:
- Support standard PoE with 48V and QoS Preference
- Allow working in the environment of -10 ~ 50℃
- Indicating lights of working status to help analyze the fault
- Lightning and static electricity protection
- Smart switch into three modes with one click:
Port VLAN mode: The PoE port (1-4/1-8/1-16/1-24) of the switch can’t communicate with each other except uplink ports.
Default mode: All ports can carry communication. It can transmit up to 100m. The speed is self-adaptive 10M/100M.
Extend mode: The PoE ports (1-4/1-8/1-16/9-24) of the switch can transmit data up to 250m. The speed changes into 10M.
Part III Notes on the use of PoE switches
-
High quality cables
The quality of the network cable is important to the PoE power supply. Generally, it is recommended to use UTP CAT5, UTP CAT5e, and UTP cat6. The internal material of the cable is also critical. Use pure copper wire instead of any aluminum wire including copper-clad aluminum wire, copper-clad iron wire, iron core wire, etc.
-
The distance is within 80 meters
Theoretically, the distance of the PoE power supply is 100 meters. Some brands even claim they can be 200 meters and 300 meters. However, in view of the quality of the Internet cable in the market and the influence of the environment, the actual power supply distance should be maintained within 80 meters as much as possible.
The PoE switch can provide power for Internet devices such as IP cameras, wireless APs, etc. and can be widely used in Ethernet access scenarios such as small and medium-sized enterprises, Internet cafes, hotels, and schools. Below is the application diagram. The Layer 2 Ethernet PoE switch accesses the data, which will be converged at the Layer 3 network by connecting to the Layer 3 managed switch like VSOL V3500-28X.
