A new feature in the Google Maps map service is intended to help users save fuel. It was first tested in Canada and the USA, and now it’s coming to Germany.
Fuel prices are still at a very high level as a result of inflation. Accordingly, many Germans are looking for ways to save as much fuel as possible when driving. This is where an innovation in Google Maps comes in.
As the group informs, Google brings the fuel-saving routes to Germany. In addition to the fastest route, the navigation service now also shows the route that can save the most fuel if it is not already the fastest.
At a glance, users should then see how high the relative fuel savings are and what differences there are between the two routes. In addition to the length of the route, factors such as the gradient of the road and traffic jams are also included in the calculation, according to Google.

In the future, Maps users will also have the option of always choosing either the fastest or the most fuel-efficient route in the settings. The application even takes into account whether you drive a petrol, diesel or electric car. There is also a separate option for this in the settings, which should further optimize route planning.
Google calculates that the use of artificial intelligence and the findings of the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) can save over one million tons of CO2 emissions worldwide every year. According to the company, since the introduction of the fuel-efficient routes in the USA and Canada, emissions have been saved as much as if 100,000 cars had been taken off the road.
The new option will be rolled out in Germany with immediate effect and should be available to all users (iOS & Android) in the next few weeks.
