The French judiciary is investigating a threat to a Russian opposition figure, who lives in exile in France. Judicial circles said on Tuesday that it was Vladimir Ossetchkin, the head of a non-governmental organization that works for prisoners in Russia. Ossetchkin himself speaks of a foiled assassination attempt, which he escaped on Monday a week ago.
“We were making dinner for the kids when I noticed a point of red light on the patio railing moving in my direction along the wall,” he told AFP. “We turned off the light, lay on the ground and called the police,” he explained. When the police arrived, shots were heard. The public prosecutor’s office in Bayonne initially did not want to comment on this.
